Exploring Your Health, Part 3: Adult Stress & Depression

Good Morning Friends, Adult Stress and Depression is a tangle of multiple symptoms (kind of like when you take a look behind your entertainment system). Recently we wrote several blog’s with well-received and very positive feedback. One was titled, EXPLORING ADD/ADHD – THE TEENAGE YEARS. Right on the coat-tails of that article was our November 2017 blog titled, Teenage Stress & Depression.

So, how many of you are stressed out to the max? Can’t get out of bed? Can’t get enough sleep in the first place? Find yourself not eating, or in my case, eating too much? Out of patience, energy, time and money? Dreading yet another day of life’s “ups and downs”? Are you feeling sad, stressed and depressed, or even worse? Have you ever thought about the word depressed? If you take depression to its end-result, you will have, distressed.

Ok, put your hands down and quit rolling your eyes at me. I am quite sure just about everyone is feeling additional stresses in their daily lives. Between job, family, extra-curricular activities and of course, current events in the news, it has indeed become very difficult to stay on track with your own mental health and well-being.

This time we would like to create a starting point and explore ADULT STRESS & DEPRESSION and how it affects all of us. This blog is not meant to be all encompassing in its informational content, but rather to provide a jumping off point in which you can evaluate, understand, and if needed, seek additional help.

“Stress is a normal psychological and physical reaction to the demands of life. A small amount of stress can be good, motivating you to perform well. But multiple challenges daily, such as sitting in traffic, meeting deadlines and paying bills, can push you beyond your ability to cope.”

Frankly, stress and its darker sister symptom, depression, are a normal part of everyday life, at least to a point – there really is no easy way of escaping it. However, there are some ways to deal with stress and depression that are considerably more healthy and beneficial than others.

Unhealthy ways of coping with stress and depression:

Symptoms of stress and depression differ from person to person. It is also very important to identify these symptoms of stress and depression in the early stages because when left untreated and ignored, stress and depression can cause (additional) severe mental and physiological health problems. Remember the word distressed?

Related symptoms of stress and depression can be as simple as cognitive discord, or a complex blending of emotional, physical and behavioral. Some of these harmful choices and symptoms include:

  • Smoking
  • Substance abuse
  • Changes in social activities and behavior
  • Binging/deviations from normal eating patterns
  • Lack of focus, drive, enthusiasm, motivation
  • Forgetfulness, confusion
  • Self-harm or injuries
  • Behavioral problems
  • Agitation, restlessness
  • Health problems – Headaches, body aches, nausea
  • Scholastic issues – Poor grades, truancy

Over time, chronic stress and depression can lead to serious health problems. What muddies the waters is the fact that we could experience a critical life-threating situation, or have our cable television go down in the middle of our all-night binge watching on Netflix and the physiological response would be exactly the same to our bodies.

Just for the fun of it, let us drill down and look into the depths of our internal processing systems. To be specific, let’s look at our nervous system and brain’s activity.

The worst part of all is: we all invoke the same stress response to our system whether a small internal issue or a much larger external (life threatening) one
